Towards Standardization: The Digital Product Passport CWA is Open for Public Consultation

Following the kick-off meeting last June, the working group developing the CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA) “Guidelines to create a Digital Product Passport – the EU project CircThread experience” has reached a significant milestone: the release of the first draft of the document for public consultation.

Over the past months, experts have worked on developing guidelines to support businesses and stakeholders in designing and implementing Digital Product Passports (DPPs). The CWA provides practical insights into different DPP design choices, their impact on data interoperability, and the role of information exchange across supply chains and product life cycles to enhance circularity and sustainability. Now, the draft is open for public comment—an opportunity to broaden the discussion and gather insights from experts, helping to refine the CWA with diverse perspectives on the topic.

What are CEN Workshop Agreements (CWA)?

A CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA) is a document developed in a CEN/CENELEC Workshop, an open and flexible platform that allows stakeholders to collaborate in defining technical specifications, guidelines, or best practices in response to emerging market needs. Unlike European Standards (EN), CWAs do not require full consensus among all CEN/CENELEC members and can be developed more quickly. CWAs are particularly valuable in innovative and technological fields, as they enable the rapid establishment of a shared framework before potentially evolving into a more structured technical standard. They can serve as a bridge towards standardization, helping industries, research projects, and policymakers align on common approaches. While CWAs are not legally binding, they play a crucial role in facilitating market adoption, interoperability, and the broader dissemination of new technologies.

Take part in the public consultation

The consultation will remain open until March 19, 2025, offering all stakeholders the opportunity to actively contribute to shaping the document.
